Whirlpool Duet Dryer showing E2 error code

Appliance: Dryer — Model: WED9200SQ0

Asked By: Lisa Ramirez

Question Details:
Hi, my Whirlpool Duet dryer suddenly stopped working and it's showing an E2 error code. I checked the lint filter and did a reset, but the error keeps coming back. What does this code mean and how can I fix it?

Hi Lisa,

The E2 error code on your Whirlpool Duet dryer indicates a shorted thermistor, which is a sensor used to monitor and regulate the dryer’s temperature. When it fails, the dryer can't correctly detect the heat level, causing it to stop for safety reasons.

Here’s how to fix the issue step-by-step:

1. Safety First

Before doing any repair, unplug the dryer and, if it's gas-powered, turn off the gas supply.

2. Access the Thermistor

  • Open the dryer door and remove the lint filter.
  • Remove the lower toe panel (two hex screws at the bottom).
  • Unscrew and remove the lint duct cover to expose the thermistor.

3. Test the Thermistor

Disconnect the two wires from the thermistor and remove it. Use a multimeter to test its resistance. At room temperature (~70°F), the resistance should be close to 11.9kΩ. If it's far off, the thermistor is faulty.

4. Replace the Thermistor

If your thermistor is bad, replace it with this exact part:

Whirlpool Dryer Thermistor Sensor - Part #DY10420000WP

Once replaced, reassemble everything and test the dryer. The error should clear and the dryer should operate normally.

If the thermistor tests good, check for wiring issues or possible problems with the control board, especially if you see loose or frayed wires.

Let me know if you need help testing or identifying the wires. I'm happy to guide you through that too.

I tested the thermistor and it is reading 2.1kΩ at room temperature. Could something else be wrong?
MasterTech Reply:

A reading of 2.1kΩ at room temperature is much too low — that matches the resistance expected only at around 150°F. This confirms your thermistor is shorted, which is exactly what triggers the E2 error code. You’ll want to go ahead and replace it.

Here is the correct replacement part:

Whirlpool Dryer Thermistor Sensor - Part #DY10420000WP

After installing the new thermistor, the E2 code should clear and your dryer will return to normal operation.

Can I keep using the dryer temporarily until the part arrives?
MasterTech Reply:

Hi Lisa,

It’s strongly advised not to use the dryer until the thermistor is replaced. The thermistor plays a crucial role in preventing overheating. Running the dryer with a shorted thermistor can cause excessive heat buildup, potentially damaging the appliance or creating a fire risk.

Please wait for the new part to arrive. Once installed, your dryer should run safely again.
